An Introduction to Decoupage
One of the most charming and enjoyable paper crafts which sadly goes overlooked by many families is the art of decoupage. The word itself derives from the French word couper'which means to cut, which gives some indication as to what the delightful craft itself involves. Decoupage is essentially the process of decorating surfaces with pictures and patterns cut out from paper which are then sealed in varnish.
The real beauty of decoupage is that almost anything can be brightened up with the craft, with woods, ceramics and metals of all kinds being the most common chosen. Furthermore, so long as the correct preparation is carried out, any paper item across the board can be used which essentially opens up an infinite number of possibilities for the whole family.
Arrangements are laid out on the surface to form either a large overall design or perhaps a mosaic, where they are subsequently glued and varnished. Additional wax or custom varnish coats can be added to create stunning finishing effects.
There is nothing quite so sublimely satisfying as taking an old vase, picture frame, plant pot or item of furniture and breathing new life into it as a stunning new creation that is unlike any other to be found anywhere in the world. Indeed, many a parent has become so incredibly won over by the craft that they have left their school management jobs and opened their own stunningly quaint craft businesses.
Decoupage is cheap, simple, safe and endlessly enjoyable for all ages, making the ideal activity for any quiet afternoon indoors.
